Over the last twenty years, the localization industry has
matured from a part-time profession into a full-fledged enterprise
with its own well developed quality standards, processes,
and technologies. The rapidly globalizing world economy is
further accelerating the growth of the localization industry
along with the industry's accompanying technology solutions that are
essential to continuous improvement in service, quality,
and productivity.
The Recycling Economy
The design it once and use it many times approach played
a fundamental role in the industrial revolution in the early
20th century. If not for duplicated and reusable parts used
for assembling everything from bicycles to cars, most of us
would still be walking on foot to and from work today. The
same is true for documentation development and subsequent
localization. Various tools and technologies have been developed
to aid with the recycling of reusable information from
content to terminology and even project management information. For example,
a content management system or CMS allows authors and technical
writers to recycle text blocks, a globalization management
system or GMS allows a localization vendor to recycle workflows,
a translation memory or TM system allow translators to recycle
translation segments. There are also other tools such as terminology
management which allows important terms to be reused during
localization, and L10N engineering management which allows
resizing and formatting information to be recycled.
Because of the availability of these L10N technologies, companies
have been able to achieve better and more consistent quality,
increased productivity, and reduced time to market.
