Terminology Management

Terminology Management is an important tool for L10N specialists. Terminology Management is essentially a glossary. This glossary of terms manages all of the words that are product and project specific. The glossary is reviewed by both the client and the translator to make certain that the appropriate target language equivalent is chosen for each product or project specific source language word. Terminology Management is then used along with Style Guides and Translation Memory programs to guarantee the best translation possible.

Terminology management technologies allow a translator to efficiently lookup and manage terminologies during translation. The most obvious benefits of these tools include automatic lookup for terminology translation, streamlined process for verifying terminology translation, consistency, and management

Properly maintained Terminology Management glossaries are excellent tools for translators and L10N specialists. Good terminology management tools also enable technical authors and translators to incorporate additional information such as definitions, context, gender, source, synonyms and product dependency, etc. Some tools also allow terminologies to be extracted based on certain sets of criteria such as occurrence, frequency, and origin. Essentially accomplishing the same benefits as Translation Memory, Terminology Management Glossaries save time, save money, and increase consistency. The end result: higher quality output that is more representative of a client's image and style and a reduced time to market.
